Learn more about the principal on the cover of our Summer 2018 issue, Elizabeth S. Mattingly of Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School in Huntsville, Alabama.
What’s your educational role? Principal of a Pre-K through eighth-grade school
Who else is in your family? My husband, Charles, and I have been married 20 years and have four children, ranging in age from middle school to college, and an Italian Greyhound named Tucky.
When you were the age of your students, what did you want to be when you grew up? As a young child I wanted to be a teacher. As I progressed through the years I wanted to be a doctor or a politician. After I started college, I felt the calling to be a teacher.
What were your favorite subjects in school? Math and art.
What are you reading right now? Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist: Unlocking the Secrets of the Last Supper by Brant Pitre.
Is your desk at school messy or neat? I have “well-organized piles.” I usually hide these piles when I have visitors to my office (thank goodness for short legs with a large area under my desk where I can put my temporary “well-organized piles” when I need to have a neat look).
Outside of school, what do you enjoy? Time with my family and ironing.
What is your favorite classroom prayer? Prayer of St. Francis and Prayer to St. Michael.
Tell us a little bit about a special project of yours. When I first became principal at Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School, I wanted to create an image of a dove (Holy Spirit) with the school community. I drew, mapped, marked out, and placed our students into this image. A teacher whose husband flew drones took an aerial photo. The morning sun cast a shadow on the students, creating a dimensional look to the dove. We used this to celebrate the year.
