When my first-grade students get together in the reading area, I use picture books to teach various reading strategies. At certain times throughout the story we stop to turn and talk. The students are given a question, and they turn and talk with their partners. The great thing about the turn-and-talk time is that everyone has a chance to share what they are thinking. Halfway through the talking time, I say, “Ahhh, switch!” That is their cue that it is the other partner’s turn to talk. This allows both partners a fair chance at sharing their thoughts. This helps encourage good listening and partnership skills.
