Great Ideas: A Sweet Surprise

A delicious way to teach fractions

From the TCT archives: Reinforce fraction lessons while making Mother’s Day gifts.

Every year in May we work on a math lesson that uses fractions. For a practical application, I allowed first-graders to make a sweet treat for Mom: chocolate-chip cookie layered mixes. Each student measured the dry ingredients using measuring cups, then layered them into a clear bag. The students wrote out the wet ingredient measurements and directions on a recipe card, which was attached to the bag.

They loved making a present for Mom while “cooking in the classroom.”
