The U.S. Department of Education has announced the winners of the 2018 National Blue Ribbon School designation, and Catholic schools make up the vast majority of the non-public schools receiving this prestigious award.
Today’s Catholic Teacher extends sincere congratulations to the many Catholic schools honored this year as National Blue Ribbon Schools.
According to the Department of Education,
The National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content. The National Blue Ribbon Schools flag gracing a school’s building is a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning. National Blue Ribbon Schools are an inspiration and a model for schools still striving for excellence. Now in its 36th year, the U. S. Department of Education has bestowed this coveted award on more than 8,800 schools.
Nearly 90 percent of the non-public schools receiving this designation this year were Catholic Schools, notes Catholic News Agency.
NCEA President/CEO Thomas W. Burnford commented,
“As Catholic schools work toward the common mission of integrating knowledge with faith in the lives of young people, the honor of being named a National Blue Ribbon School reaffirms their excellence and showcases these schools as extraordinary communities. It is with great joy that we celebrate and witness these schools’ noteworthy accomplishments.”
As the National Catholic Education Association observed,
This award is a great tribute to the dedication of faculties who clearly value academic excellence, as well as to the commitment of students who strive to succeed to the best of their ability.
