When you were the age of your students, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An astronaut.

What was your favorite subject in school?

My favorite class was Astronomy. It’s pure joy to look up at the heavens on a summer night!

What are you reading right now?

The Betrothed by Alessandro Manzoni.

Is your desk at school messy or neat?

Neat.

What is your next classroom project (or read-aloud, if you prefer)?

Something that will make the students tell me they don’t want to leave my class! We recently used the Xbox Kinect Sensor Bar to do motion-capture programming. We caught falling lions (our mascot) by stretching out our arms.

Outside of school, what do you enjoy?

I’m always looking for truly innovative ways to make each student’s learning experience a joyful one. In that regard, it’s important to love ourselves by taking an occasional break. I love walking, boating, and watching a good movie.

What is your favorite classroom prayer?

The daily Gospel reading — which lets Jesus Christ speak to every student directly.

Tell us a little bit about a special project of yours.

Maryvale’s “Go Fly a Kite” initiative is a new project I started in my Engineering Through Robotics class. It’s designed to teach the principles of flight by having the students go out and fly a kite themselves. We learn about wind speed, wind direction, and the basics of aerospace engineering. Because students today are so engrossed in the digital world, I was looking for a way to get out of the classroom and do something really fun while also learning some advanced concepts. Engineering programs have many scholarship opportunities for young women who are interested, so it’s a win-win all around.
