Learn more about the teacher on our Spring 2018 cover, an instructional technology specialist, Apple teacher, and Google certified trainer at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque School in St. Louis, Missouri!
What grades and subjects do you teach? Technology coordinator/instructional technology specialist K–8
Who else is in your family? Husband Steve, daughter Katie, son-in-law Matt, and grandson Luke all live in St. Louis; son Tom and daughter-in-law Kelli live in Seattle.
When you were the age of your students, what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be an art teacher!
What were your favorite subjects in school? Art, science, and social studies.
What are you reading right now? The Innovator’s Mindset: Empower Learning, Unleash Talent, and Lead a Culture of Creativity by George Couros.
Is your desk at school messy or neat? I have a standing desk now, and it is so much easier to keep clean because there is very little horizontal surface to collect clutter.
What is your next classroom project (or read-aloud, if you prefer)? With the students, we are winding down the school
year, and each grade level creates an All About Me slide presentation using Google Slides. We up the difficulty each year and push in lots of creative tech. By the end of eighth grade, they should have a fun glimpse into how much they have changed over the years in their Google Drive accounts. Our faculty-designed K–5 STEM/Art Lab will complement the Innovation Lab this school year.
Outside of school, what do you enjoy? I walk a lot. I’ve participated in Rock-n-Roll half-marathons, and I have a dream of participating in one at Walt Disney World someday. I enjoy taking pictures and playing with images. Honestly, I love to learn. I am a fanatical edcamper. I help organize #EdcampSTL and #EdcampArchSTL, and am a co-founder of #EdcampMagic (Walt Disney World — 2017 was our third year). I am also a moderator of #MOedchat.
What is your favorite classroom prayer? Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi.
Tell us about a special project of yours. The SMMA Innovation Lab is a work in progress. I feel especially blessed to be able to work in a position that is the intersection of my classroom experience, MAT in edtech, and PhD in curriculum and instruction. Designed utilizing student voice, the Innovation Lab is a combination makerspace, computer lab, and studio that enhances PBL and incorporates STEAM concepts and other curriculum-related goals and standards. Working every day in the Innovation Lab provides me with many opportunities to learn with and from the students and teachers of SMMA and be constantly amazed by them!
Where and how can we find you online?
I am a moderator of #MOedchat on Thursday nights at 9 p.m. CT, and I try to stop by #CatholicEdchat on Saturdays at 8 a.m. CT.
