For Our Country’s Election

by Jean Grant

Prepare your class for this year’s national elections with this prayer service.

Preparation

Prior to the prayer service, place a flag and crucifix on the prayer table where they are easily accessible. Select one boy and one girl. All classmates gather around the prayer table. After the introduction, the selected children will come forward and stand at each side of the prayer table. One will hold the flag so all may see it, and one will hold up the crucifix in a reverent way.

Leader: Our country will vote soon for a president and vice president of the United States and other elected officials. As those elected accept the challenge to guide us into the future, we pray that their decisions will be open-minded and wise.

The two selected students come forward now and take their place.

The response to each petition will be, “Jesus, bless our leaders with wisdom and insight.”

Leader: For our national leaders, that they will always strive for peace in the world and the safe return of our military troops…

All: Jesus, bless our leaders with wisdom and insight.

Leader: For our next president and vice president, that they will work to preserve life at all stages…

All: Jesus, bless our leaders with wisdom and insight.

Leader: For all interested in politics, that they will unite for the good of America…

All: Jesus, bless our leaders with wisdom and insight.

Leader: For those suffering from increased prices for fuel and food…

All: Jesus, bless our leaders with wisdom and insight.

Leader: For our world, that people will turn to faith and prayer for positive change…

All: Jesus, bless our leaders with wisdom and insight.

Leader: For our local elected leaders, that they will work to build community…

All: Jesus, bless our leaders with wisdom and insight.

Leader: For our planet, that we may work diligently to protect it from harm…

All: Jesus, bless our leaders with wisdom and insight.

Leader: We place these petitions before you, dear Jesus, and ask for your blessing on our needs. We come to you with heartfelt confidence that your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Please close with the Our Father prayer.
